How to Register Your Business with the RGD in Ghana
Why register your business?
Formalising your business unlocks access to bank accounts, loans, government contracts, and customer trust. Here is how to get it done.
1. Do a name search
Visit the Registrar General's Department (RGD) or use the online portal to check that your preferred business name is available.
2. Choose your business type
Most small businesses register as a Sole Proprietorship or a Company Limited by Shares. Sole proprietorship is faster and cheaper; a limited company offers liability protection.
3. Complete the forms and pay
Fill in the registration forms, provide your TIN and ID, and pay the applicable fees.
4. Collect your certificate
Once approved, you receive your Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration. Keep copies safe — you will need them often.
Tip: Register for your Tax Identification Number (TIN) early, as it is required at almost every step.
Formal registration is the foundation of a credible, bankable business.
