Ecobank Expands Support for SMEs Across Africa

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) remain the backbone of Africa’s economy, accounting for nearly 80% of businesses across the continent and employing around 60% of the workforce. Recognising their importance, Ecobank is expanding its efforts to provide financing, market access, and digital tools to help SMEs grow and compete across Africa.

According to the bank, one of the biggest challenges facing African SMEs is access to capital. To address this, Ecobank has strengthened partnerships with institutions such as the African Guarantee Fund (AGF), Proparco, AGRA, the African Development Bank, and the Mastercard Foundation to increase funding opportunities for businesses.

In Ghana, several financing initiatives are supporting SMEs, particularly those involved in agriculture, climate-smart solutions, and trade. These programmes are helping entrepreneurs access the working capital needed to scale operations and create jobs.

Ecobank is also promoting cross-border trade through its Single Market Trade Hub, a digital platform that connects buyers and sellers across Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The platform enables businesses to find new markets, showcase products, and access trade and payment solutions.

The bank’s digital transformation strategy is further improving SME access to financial services. New technologies, including mobile business banking applications, digital invoicing platforms, and data-driven lending solutions, are helping entrepreneurs manage cash flow and access credit more efficiently.

One example highlighted by the bank is Aseda Wholesale & Retail Limited in Ghana. The business has expanded from a cleaning services company into a growing retail operation with multiple supermarket outlets after receiving financing and support through Ecobank’s business programmes.

As Africa continues to pursue greater economic integration through AfCFTA, Ecobank says its focus remains on empowering SMEs with the tools, funding, and market access required to drive sustainable economic growth across the continent.
